Subtitled "A Short History of the History Book" the Cartooning Against Capitalism zine features interviews with two of the book's creators Gittan Jönsson and Annika Elmquist and reprints from the book.
For the uninitiated, The History Book was created in the late 1960s by four students from Konstfack University in Stockholm, Sweden. The group decided to leave their formal education behind and bring their graduation project to life—a book on the people's world history. The result was "History Book," a serial depiction of the rise of capitalism from the perspective of the working class.
It covers the history of Europe and the Third World from the Middle Ages to the present, clearly explaining colonialism and imperialism. The book is infused with the optimism that fueled the passion of the '68 generation. "History Book" became a true Ordfront Classic after its first publication in 1970, quickly finding its place in many Swedish homes and widely used by history teachers throughout the 1970s.
