In 1995, Richmond, VA post-punk/hardcore band hose.got.cable toured the U.S. for the last time. Their Chicago stop on October 22, 1995 was a basement show at the Winthrop House in Edgewater.
The Winthrop House in the mid to late ‘90s and early ‘00s was the site of many great live basement shows. I know this because I was at almost all of them either as an audience member or in a band.
The house (a 3-flat buildng, actually) was also the home to a record label, makeshift recording studio, band practice space, and a revolving cast of roommates and characters, most of whom worked nights in the hospitality industry and did not have to be up in the morning. Woe to those who did.
House resident and rock raconteur Mike Wing’s recent discovery of a cache of 4-track cassette tapes means some of these basement recordings will be documented in the coming months. First up is hose.got.cable live @ the winthrop.house. This live album, mastered by Kris Poulin, will be released by RoosterCow Records on October 31 as a digital LP with a 24-page booklet assembled by hose.got.cable guitarist/vocalist Chris Wade.
